Magazine Day Event on April 23, 2008

In celebration and recognition of that special person who goes the extra mile to impress their clients, vendors, or team. From what I’ve heard Sales Executives often steal the spotlight in terms of rewards and recognition, so I thought this was a great way to acknowledge Toronto’s Media Buyers & Planners (sometimes referred to as the ‘ugly cousins’), in conjunction with their Sales Execs.

It’s fairly simple. All nominations are anonymous and you may only nominate one candidate. If you are a Buyer or Planner, you can nominate a Sales Executive. If you are a Sales Executive, you can nominate a Buyer or Planner. Then at the Magazine Day event on April 23, 2008 winners will be announced live!

It is always refreshing to see Toronto recognizing excellence in any fields, however this is particularly nice, since Media Buyers & Planners are a times overlooked.

http://www.adclubto.com/awards/magazine_awards.shtml

Other cool AdClub events: SKI AND SNOWBOARD DAY

I thought this was a great way to get the ad community together, which from what I understand, among day-in-day-out industry parties, stood out from their good old fashion booze-fests. Their 9th annual celebration took place on Friday Feb. 22nd and tickets sold out fast. Will definitely keep this in mind next winter!

In 2005 the NABS Board of Directors commissioned a group of current and past volunteer Board Members to create a recognition program to properly thank the people who have helped NABS grow and become the organization it is today. The ‘NABS HONOUR ROLL’ was created to recognize the individuals and organizations who have contributed exceptional support in the formation and development of NABS, both nationally and regionally.

A selection committee was formed, headed by Mr. Robert White, Senior VP of The Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC). The committee consists of previous and current NABS Board Chairs from both NABS Canada and the Vancouver-based chapter, NABS WEST.

“There is no doubt that the growth of NABS is due to the hard work and dedication of many individuals and organizations, it is essential to recognize outstanding contribution now and in the future as it exemplifies the vision that NABS truly belongs to all of us,”
Mr. Robert White

“Getting ideas like NABS is the easy part. Turning the ideas into reality is the hard part. And in NABS’ early going there was some really tough sledding, believe me. I would like to dedicate this award to all those others who shared the vision, and toiled away at the NABS coal face of fundraising, allocations, ad auction, event management, and education. Their hard work has made NABS a reality and they deserve the recognition,”
Mr. Rupert Brendon

Criteria:

Unique personal commitment representative of ‘Outstanding volunteerism’

A minimum of one specific contribution on the Board, committee or program level

Corporate Partnership – a long-term partnership approach to promoting and supporting NABS

Whether you support homosexuality or not, I think its important to pay attention to the numbers that speak volumes. Particularly in a city like Toronto, one that prides itself on embracing diversity, it is refreshing to see community based initiatives not only celebrating Toronto’s cultural diversity, but reinforcing our city’s acceptance-mantra. As a cluster, its important to pay attention to our Gay & Lesbian community, one that is very close knit, and has been (almost by nature) proactive in forwarding community based initiatives supporting its Advertising and Marketing groups. Pink Banana has captured some interesting numbers in their April 2008 Annual Report that suggest not only some lucrative opportunities in tourism and travel, but also some “niche cluster” opportunities in the Gay & Lesbian Travel segment. I am very impressed with the depth of this clusters’ dedication.

The international Gay and Lesbian community spends over $54 billion in the travel and hospitality market annually. An initiative put into action several years ago, “Travel Gay Friendly Toronto” is attracting more gay tourism to Toronto than ever before. Now, however, the Gay Community of business professionals has the opportunity to dramatically increase their market share and the direct benefit to our community. The creation of the Gay Toronto Tourism Guild (in 2002) and their subsequent alliance with the Ontario Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce has resulted in a multi-level initiative to brand Toronto as the greatest Gay and Lesbian destination in the world. In order for The Gay Toronto Tourism Guild (THE GUILD) and the Ontario Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (THE CHAMBER ) to work in the best interest of the gay owned businesses in Toronto, we must all work together to reap the vast and varied rewards that business and leisure travel to Toronto represents.

Widgets have been predicted to be the next great vehicle in online advertising, but will do they work? The Internet is the focal point that all media are looking to leverage. The digital landscape continues to change quarter after quarter, and marketers and advertisers need help to:

If I weren’t scheduled for a presentation for my e-commerce course, I’d definitely try to attend this annual conference! I think this presents some tremendous opportunities for the advertising cluster to not only discuss the ‘new and upcoming’ emerging technologies, but as well, for those of us that are opportunity-oriented, to pinpoint some areas for further innovation. I think its time for this industry to overcome its reactive nature, and become more proactive.

Article Key Points:

“Digital really has transformed the way we do business,” says Sunni Boot, President of ZenithOptimedia and conference co-chair. “Our conference will examine the major issues, highlight important technologies and practices and also explore some of the ways that people are adapting to the new digital reality.”

(A friend of mine has worked for Sunni. Apparently she started out as a receptionist at Zenith and low and behold, has climed the ladder to advertising excellence! Very inspiring!)

Scheduled for April 8 in Toronto, the 2008 CMDC conference will include presentations and discussions by more than 20 dynamic industry leaders, including luncheon speaker Nadir Mohamed, President and Chief Operating Officer of the Communications Group of Rogers Communications, as well as a feature interview with Ivan Fecan, President and CEO of CTVglobemedia.

“The dominant concern in our business today is the digital arena and its broad and varied implications,” says Cathy Collier, Senior Vice-President and Media Director of Cossette Media and CMDC conference co-chair. “It only made sense to make this the central topic of this year’s conference.”

Some 800-plus industry professionals from all sectors of the media and marketing community are expected to attend the year’s premier industry conference.

http://www.cmdc.ca/news.asp

I will be very interested to see the outcome of this conference, and what emerging technologies present which opportunities. I have a feeling the area of Social Netorking 2.0-related topics will be discussed among other 2.0 subject matter. Should be interesting!
